Dynamic Effective Porosity Explains Laboratory Experiments on Watertable Fluctuations in Coastal Unconfined Aquifers

چکیده
Watertable fluctuations are a characteristic feature of coastal unconfined aquifers. They interact with the vadose zone creating dynamic effective porosity, for which new (empirical) expression is proposed based on dimensionless parameter related to fluctuation frequency. After comparing both experimental data and numerical simulations, implemented into modified Boussinesq equation, allowing examination effects porosity watertable fluctuations. The dispersion relation arising from equation predicts laboratory accurately, highlighting importance in modeling This turn confirms applicability real-valued porosity. An outcome that phase lag between total moisture (above watertable) height measured experiments using vertical soil columns (1D systems) can be ignored when predicting aquifers (2D systems). always smaller than so by comparison there reduction water exchange saturated zones. Consequently, waves propagate further landward without standing wave behaviors.

متن کاملWatertable waves in unconfined aquifers: sloping boundary effects
Watertable waves generated by forcing from oceanic oscillations play an important role in the availability and quality of coastal groundwater resources. Here we present results from laboratory experiments which examine the influence of a boundary slope on the mass transfer from an oscillating clear water reservoir into a homogeneous, unconfined aquifer. The experimental forcing period is suffic...
متن کاملInfluence of the tide on the mean watertable in an unconfined, anisotropic, inhomogeneous coastal aquifer
For an isotropic, homogeneous coastal aquifer, previous studies [Aust J Phys 26 (1973) 513; Water Resour Res 17 (4) (1981) 1222] have found that the mean watertable is influenced by the sea tide and will stand considerably above the mean sea level even in the absence of net inland recharge. This paper investigates the influence of the tide on the mean watertable for the case that the unconfined...
متن کاملAbstraction, desalination and recharge method to control seawater intrusion into unconfined coastal aquifers
In this study, abstraction, desalination and recharge method and SEAWAT numerical model are used to investigate seawater intrusion repulsion in a hypothetical two-dimensional coastal aquifer to understand the relation of seawater intrusion with abstraction, desalination and recharge parameters (i.e. abstraction/recharge rate, wells distance and depth). Abstraction, desalination and recharge con...
متن کاملDynamic-spatial management of coastal aquifers
We analyze the management of a coastal aquifer under seawater intrusion using distributed control methods. The aquifer’s state is taken as the water head elevation, which varies with time and in space since extraction, natural recharge and lateral water flows vary with time and in space. The water head, in turn, induces a temporalspatial seawater intrusion process, which changes the volume of f...
